SUMMARY:Opioid Settlement Funds Listening Session
DESCRIPTION:There is $2.2 billion coming into the state and counties over the next 10-18 years from the recent opioid settlements. These funds are to be used to expand Harm Reduction\, Recovery\, and Substance Use Disorder services. There is a long list of options and strategies for those in charge of the spending to choose from\, and some could potentially do more harm than good. We want to make sure these funds get used properly on strategies that have been proven to mitigate and decrease the amount of overdoses and overdose fatalities in our communities. \nWe recognize that the opioid crisis has impacted many residents in our communities\, and not just the ones struggling with the disorder. These are the people who know best what the community needs in order to decrease the overdose and overdose fatality rate. Their input needs to be included in the decision-making process when it comes to spending these funds. We are holding this listening session to support the county in collecting that input. \nIf you would like to learn more about the money coming into your community\, or share your thoughts and ideas on how you think the county should spend these funds\, please register below to join our Listening Session at Club Serenity in Charleroi on Thursday\, September 14th at 6pm. \nClick Here to Register!

SUMMARY:MAD FACTS Debrief & Healing Space
DESCRIPTION:For 5 years\, CCJ has been working with local families who have been impacted by rare childhood cancers. After making demands to Governor Wolf\, local families secured a promise in 2019 that the state would conduct studies observing the apparent increase in rare childhood cancers in Southwestern Pennsylvania. These folks have created a group called “MAD-FACTS: Moms and Dads – Family Awareness of Cancer Threat Spike.” \nThe University of Pittsburgh and the Pennsylvania Department of Health are holding a public meeting at PennWest California University on August 15th to release the findings of the PA Health and Environment Studies in Southwest Pennsylvania. These studies looked at the prevalence of rare childhood cancers\, asthma\, and low birth weights in proximity to fracking in Southwestern\, Pennsylvania. \nMAD-FACTS will be hosting a debrief healing space following the public meeting at the California Methodist Church to discuss the results and be with one another to process what we learn. There will be refreshments available.\n \nIf childcare\, transportation\, or financing is a barrier to you or someone you know to attend\, please let us know and we will accommodate you. \n \nClick Here to Register

SUMMARY:Kids Fishing Day
DESCRIPTION:Come out to Dutch Fork Lake and join us for 🐠Free Kids Fishing Day🐟 on Sunday May 28th. Kids and adults can fish all day without a license.  We will be set up at the main parking lot by the boat launch from 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM. \nWe’re so excited to report that we’ve already surpassed our goal for registration: so many kids are going to be fishing with us! We are working really hard to make sure that every kid who comes to this event will have a pole and supplies — but make sure to register soon so we can try to be prepared for you! For those who register after May 19th: if you have your own pole\, bring it with you\, just in case. We’ll have extra poles on-site\, but we can’t guarantee that they’ll be strung. All are still welcome to enjoy the Free Kids Fishing Day and Dutch Fork Lake!  \nIf you are an experienced angler\, come out and help us teach the little ones some tips and tricks! Select that you would like to volunteer below. \nThe Center for Coalfield Justice is co-sponsoring this event with Buffalo Creek Watershed Association as part of our efforts to highlight and protect Dutch Fork Lake. You can learn more about our work at protectdutchforklake.org and help us protect Dutch Fork Lake from future undermining and sign our petition. Please add any stories or pictures you might have of Dutch Fork Lake here\, so we can continue to share stories about why Dutch Fork Lake is important and worth protecting! \nPlease bring your own water bottle as well as your own chairs if you prefer sitting while fishing. Be sure to check the forecast and dress accordingly. We will see you there rain or shine. ⛅️☀️ \nIf you’ve joined us before and your child has outgrown their pole\, please bring that pole back and exchange it for a bigger pole! \nPlease register separately all adults planning on attending. Thank you! \nClick here to Register!

Please consider bringing seeds to swap\, but don’t worry if you don’t have any to share: We’ll have lots of extras. Leave what you can\, take what you need. Stay as long or as little as you’d like. \nThe event will be in-person at CCJ’s office\, located at 31 East Chestnut St\, Washington\, PA\, from 1:00 to 4:00 PM.  Light refreshments will be provided. \nRegister Here! \nIn addition to the seed swap\, CCJ will give out free Grow-Your-Own-Potatoes kits for those who register to receive one. Each kit will include one container with potting soil\, potato sets\, and as many other seeds as you’d like. All potato bags have already been claimed – if you are still interested\, please select to be added to the waiting list!  \nWe will have a Kids’ Activity\, so bring your little ones! They can learn the joys of starting seeds by planting fast-growing green beans. They can also paint their own terracotta pot to take their soon-to-sprout seeds home in! (available as long as supplies last – please pre register so we can get enough supplies for everyone to enjoy this fun activity and experiment!) \nIn addition\, we will have information available at the Seed Swap about the community cookbook we are creating. We would love it if you could contribute some of your favorite recipes! \nFinally\, some of our local partners from the Seed-to-Supper Program and Firefly Gardens will be at the Seed Swap to tell you about other fun opportunities coming up for those who love to garden at home or in the community. \nIf you aren’t able to make it to our Seed Swap but would like to contribute\, feel free to mail seeds to us at P.O. BOX 4023\, Washington\, PA 15301. \nWe are so excited to talk gardening\, seeds\, and sustainability with you all! 🌱🌷🌞 \n-The CCJ Team\n \nRegister Here!

SUMMARY:Pitt Health and Environment Study Public Meeting

Researchers from the Environmental Health Project will also provide insight into these studies and the broader research available around the subject.\n\nThe meeting will take place on October 5th in Canonsburg\, PA from 5:30 to 7:30. There will be a virtual option made available for those who cannot participate in person. Please register at this link to obtain the location and zoom information for the meeting\, as well as to submit questions ahead of time.

SUMMARY:Stop The Dirty Deal Rally at the U.S. Capitol!
DESCRIPTION:Join CCJ (at no cost to you!) on a trip to D.C. on Thursday\, September 8th to ensure members of Congress pledge to block any efforts to dish out new fossil fuel handouts by weakening environmental protections. \nSenator Manchin and Senator Schumer made a dirty deal to gut environmental protection to pass the Inflation Reduction Act. No one has seen the details of bill yet but a one-page memo leaked of this Dirty Deal guts bedrock environmental protections and endangers public health\, fast tracks fossil fuels\, and pushes politicians’ pet projects. Senator Schumer could attach this legislation to a must-pass government spending bill in September\, so we must do everything we can to protect our rights to clean air and water. \nFor more information\, read the related blog by our Community Advocate Nina Victoria. \nThe bus will leave the Beau Street\, Washington\, PA Park and Ride around 7:00 AM on Thursday\, September 8th. There will be an additional stop in Waynesburg to pick up more people. We will arrive in DC around 11:30 AM and participate in the rally at the Capital that afternoon. CCJ will cover meals for those who participate. We will leave DC around 8 PM after the event and will be slated to be back in Washington\, PA around 12:30 AM. \nThis is a no-cost event\, but in order to know how many buses we will need\, you must register by September 6th. Please click here to register.
