FERC Decision, PJM Plan Increases Energy Costs and Public Health Risks
Washington, PA – Today, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) approved PJM Interconnection’s Reliability Resource Initiative (RRI) plan to fast-track the development of fracked gas power plants over the renewable energy projects – over 120 gigawatts of solar and wind capacity – that have been waiting in line, some for as long as six years. This initiative prioritizes large, polluting gas plants that will not be operational for years, undermining Pennsylvania’s clean energy investments and leading to higher electricity costs for Pennsylvanians.
The Center for Coalfield Justice’s Community Advocate, Jason Capello, issues the following statement in reaction to this news:
“This decision from FERC will hurt Pennsylvanians by increasing utility costs, undercutting grid reliability, and incentivizing more fracked gas production. PJM is putting communities at risk by exposing them to the cancer-causing, asthma-exacerbating pollutants that are inherently linked to fracking while failing to develop an effective plan to lower energy costs. This is a bad deal for Pennsylvanians.”
