On Saturday, November 20, 2022, several members of CCJ staff helped to distribute water to residents of New Freeport who have been without safe, clean drinking water since June. This was possible because of the incredible support from all of the people who donated cases and jugs of water or who made monetary donations to our water drive for our neighbors in New Freeport.
We were able to raise $3,770, making it possible to purchase a refillable water dispenser and three 5-gallon jugs of water for each household that has been affected. In addition, about 150 cases or containers of bottled water were taken down to the New Freeport area for people to pick up for their families.
Dozens of households are still in the dark about whether or not their drinking water is safe, as state and private investigations are still being conducted. Additionally, many residents are outside the “zone of presumption” and are not being supplied with any replacement water.
Since June, the residents who have been affected have had to purchase all of the water they drink or cook with. Some of them are still showering with unsafe water. The nearest big box store is 40 minutes away, and city water is unavailable in their area. Once again, we are reminded of the importance of having clean water – something that should never be taken for granted!
The Center for Coalfield Justice will purchase more water with the money that has been donated and make another delivery before the New Year.
